How to Change Electronic Synth Voices

In digital music terminology, a "voice" refers to a specified sound setting. For example, if your synthesizer contains a library of preset voices, these may include names like "Bright Trance Lead," "Deep Bass" or "Electronic Drum Kit." By changing between the different voices, turn your synthesizer into hundreds of different instruments all rolled into one package to take full control of your melodies, bass and percussion.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "Voices" menu on your synthesizer. Depending on the type of synthesizer, it may appear as a button, or as an option on your LCD screen. If you do not see the word "Voices," look for the word "Presets," "Instruments" or "Sound Bank." If using an analog synthesizer with no preset voices, proceed to Step 4.

    • 2

Click the arrow buttons to navigate between your different voice options. Some synthesizers require you to turn a circular 'Value" dial with your finger, rather than pressing an arrow button.

    • 3

Play the keys on your keyboard to listen to each voice. Whether using a keyboard synthesizer or a sound module connected to a MIDI keyboard, the keys can help you to find just the right voice for your current needs. If one voice does not sound quite right for your live performance or recording, try the next one.

Edit your voices (or your default voice, if your synth has no voice menu). If using an analog synthesizer, or a digital synthesizer heavily equipped with knobs and sliders, manipulate your default voices to create sound settings. For instance, adjust "Attack," "Sustain" and "Decay" to control how quickly your notes respond and how quickly the sounds fade away. Make your voice sound more bold and prominent by adding "Cutoff," and apply a hint of electronic static by adding "Resonance." By switching between different oscillators (sine, triangle, sawtooth and square), make your voices sound completely different.
