How to Set up a MIDI Reaper

Reaper is a digital audio workstation (DAW) for PC enabling you to record, edit, sequence and mix songs. MIDI stands for "musical instrument digital interface." This universal protocol sends data commands to a DAW to trigger synthesized sounds. You can use an external hardware controller or a "virtual" controller to send MIDI signals to Reaper.

  1. Virtual MIDI Controller

      Launch Reaper.

      Click the "VU" meter on the track.

      Click "MIDI Input." Select "Virtual MIDI Input" from the drop-down menu to make the "QWERTY" keyboard your MIDI input device.

    Hardware Controller

      Connect a MIDI controller to any available USB port.

      Launch Reaper.

      Click "Open" and select "New Track."

      Click the "VU" meter on the track to select an input device. Click "MIDI Input," "All MIDI Inputs" and select your specific MIDI input device from the drop-down menu.
