How to Scramble Explicit Words in a Song

Not long ago, the only way to obtain a profanity-free version of a song was to buy a "clean" copy of the album for around $15. Luckily, if you already have the song or album in mp3 format on your computer, you can easily do your own editing with Audacity, an audio editing program that you can download online for free.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the song in Audacity. When the file opens a visual overview of the song will appear.

    • 2

Zoom in by clicking the magnifying glass button with a + sign on it so that you can edit precise syllables.

    • 3

Listen to the song while watching the overview, until you hear the word or words that you want to edit.

    • 4

Click to the beginning of where the profane sound wave starts (this might take a couple listens to pinpoint exactly) and highlight the word by dragging your mouse to the right.

    • 5

Open the "Effect" toolbar and click "reverse." This will reverse the portion of the song that you highlighted, making the word indecipherable.
