How to Mix a Track in Surround

Mixing a track for surround sound requires a well-developed ear for music, a sound production studio and equipment. Surround sound used to mean just stereo -- left and right channels. Now surround sound systems can have up to nine channels. The sound engineer must select how many channels to mix the audio to. Even if the sound engineer mixes for 9.1 surround sound and the audio is played on a normal stereo, the left and right channels will still be in stereo.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a professional sound production and mixing program such as Cubase, Logic, Pro Tools or Adobe Sound Booth. The process for mixing surround sound is almost identical regardless which program is used. They all have the similar features and interface.

    • 2

Open the sound production program and open a new project. Select the number of tracks according to the number of elements needed for the mix. For example, a song may have one track for drums, another for guitar and another for vocals.

    • 3

Import the various samples into the program, each to their own track. Each track will need to be mixed individually for the surround sound to be effective.

    • 4

Click the "Track" you want to work on. Locate the tool for "Surround Sound." Configure the levels in each channel. For example, in a 5.1 stereo project, the user may want 10 percent volume in the right rear, 10 percent in the left rear, 20 percent in the front right, 20 percent in the front left and 40 percent in the center. Each track will be configured differently, depending on the desired effect.

    • 5

Mix the levels for surround sound in each additional track of the recording. This can take some time and requires a good ear, as the art of sound engineering is in the mixing.

    • 6

Export the mixed recording by clicking "File," "Save As." Enter a "File Name," select a "File Type" and location for the new mix. Click "Save."
