How to Connect an M-Audio Axiom Controller to Logic

Logic is an industry-standard digital audio workstation application by Apple designed to run with almost any MIDI controller. Although certain controllers are easier to work with than others, the Axiom series of MIDI controllers by M-Audio are among the most Logic-friendly controllers available. Because Mac OS X's class-compliant MIDI drivers include built-in support for the Axiom series, you don't need to install further drivers or other software to use the controller in Logic.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Mac before connecting the Axiom for the first time. While it's safe to make the connection prior to powering on your Mac, various driver or other hardware conflicts might arise as the operating system loads. This may cause the booting process to take much longer than normal.

    • 2

Connect the Axiom controller to an available USB port on your Mac using the supplied USB cable. The Axiom is powered by the USB port, so you don't have to plug it into an electrical outlet.

    • 3

Turn the Axiom on. The power switch is located on the back of the unit, next to the USB port. Your Mac will automatically detect and recognize the Axiom on powering up.

    • 4

Open the Applications folder and then the Utilities folder. Double-click the icon labeled "Audio MIDI Setup." This application is used to establish connections between different audio and/or MIDI devices on your system. If a window named "MIDI Studio" doesn't appear on opening the application, choose "Show MIDI Window" from the "Window" menu. This window displays a graphical representation of the different MIDI devices on your system and their interconnections.

    • 5

Ensure that an icon labeled "Axiom" appears in the "MIDI Studio" window. It should appear automatically with no further setup after you turn the Axiom on. If it doesn't, click the "Rescan MIDI" button in the toolbar. If the Axiom still doesn't appear, turn it off and then back on and click "Rescan MIDI" again. If it doesn't appear after attempting the procedures in Step 5,you may have a problem with your hardware. Contact M-Audio customer support for information.

Open Logic. Choose an established project from the pop-up screen or select "Empty Project." Logic loads your selection and displays its default Arrangement view. Because OS X and Logic include the necessary drivers, the Axiom will work automatically in Logic to control the active MIDI instrument or effect.

Use Logic's "Controller Assignments" facility to establish links between parameters within Logic and individual controllers on the Axiom. For example, you may want to use one of the Axiom's faders to control the master volume. Consult Logic's documentation for details on using the "Controller Assignments" function.
