Step 2: Remove Radio
1. Locate radio in your VW Bug. It's typically in the center of the dashboard.
2. Remove trim around radio. Use the screwdriver or pry tool to gently pry the trim pieces away from the radio. They are usually held in place by plastic clips. Pull the pieces straight toward you to remove them.
3. Remove the radio unit. Once the trim is removed, you should see four screws that are holding the radio in place. Remove these screws, and then pull the radio unit straight out from the dashboard.
Step 3: Find the Radio Code Label
1. Check radio's casing. Some radio units have the radio code printed on a label inside the casing. If so, you can simply read the code off the label.
2. Look in the owner's manual. The radio code may be printed inside your VW Bug's owner's manual.
Step 4: Retrieve the Radio Code Online
1. VW dealers can retrieve code. If you're unable to find the radio code anywhere else, you can contact your local VW dealership and they can provide you with the code. This may require proof of ownership and identification.
2. Online code decoders. There are websites and online services that can decode the radio code based on your car model and serial numbers. These usually require a small fee.
Step 5: Enter Radio Code
*Once you have the code, you'll need to enter it into your radio to unlock it:
1. Turn the radio on.
2. Press and hold the "Code" button (may have the code symbol on it).
3. Release the button when you see "code" or "SAFE" displayed.
4. Use the radio station preset buttons to enter the four-digit code.
5. Press the "Code" button again to confirm.
The radio will either accept the code and turn on, or reject the code and remain locked. If it rejects the code, you may need to contact VW dealership or use a different online decoder service to obtain the correct code.
