One of the band members, who had already been in two smaller groups, said he wanted a name “more like Take That” and suggested the name Westside. After being rejected due to the confusion it might have caused with the American hip hop group of the same name, the name was changed to Weslife, which was later changed to Westlife.
The change was made because Louis Walsh, the manager of Boyzone, felt the name Westlife would be more commercially successful.
