For the increasing numbers of artists in Europe how were they paid?

Patronage

Aristocracy, the church and the monarchy were their patron.

• Patron provided money directly to the artist;

• Provided a stipend so the artist could work full time;

• Provided housing, food, and travel; and

• Commissioned finished work that the patron would own.

Guilds

• Guilds were formed by artisans, including artists, to

• Ensure quality of work;

• Set prices;

• Provide legal protection;

• Establish educational standards; and

• Provide patronage.

Art Markets

• Artists set up studio/shops where finished work was for sale;

• Artists displayed work at fairs and/or rented a space for a short period of time; and

• Dealers bought and sold artwork.
