Open yourself up to bands of various genres. It is OK to stick with genres that you are familiar with, but being willing to listen to bands from different genres increases your chances of finding a good band.
Ask your friends and family members who some of their favorite bands are. Borrow the CDs of some of the bands they like. Listen to the music with your friends and see what they like about the bands. Purchase other albums from the bands that you like from your friend's collection.
Visit night clubs and cafes where local bands perform. Stay for the entire set. If you do not like the first few songs from the band, you may find that you like one or two of their songs at the end of the performance. Get any CDs or information you can for accessing more of the bands music.
Go to online sites, such as Soundclick, MySpace, Amazon and Facebook. This is a convenient way to search for good bands because you can specify exactly what you are looking for in a band. Rummage through the music groups for bands according to their genre. Type in the name of your favorite band in the Amazon Search engine. Navigate to the bottom of the page and take note of the bands under the "Similar Artist" section. Listen to samples of bands.
