How to Get a Record Deal With the Ultimate Group

Getting a record deal from The Ultimate Group is a matter of perseverance and determination. You not only have to be a great artist, but you often need to expose yourself to the artists on the label and draw attention, so that you are approached by the A&R department of the label. There are several ways to go about getting a record deal, but make sure that your present yourself in a professional manner at all times.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust your style, so that you fit on the roster. Smaller labels such as The Ultimate Group have limited resources and often work with artists of similar genres to save on marketing and promotion costs, so be prepared to make whatever changes that are needed to fit onto the roster. The Ultimate Group usually signs and develops solo artists and small singing groups in the hip-hop and R&B genre, so assemble a small group, or continue as a solo artist to catch their attention.

    • 2

Secure a manager or management company that has connections with The Ultimate Group, also known as TUG. Research managers nationwide who work with similar artists, as well as those connected to the artists on TUG's roster. Make contact with them and send them a link to your material, or ask if they would like you to send them some of your material. This way, you will have someone in your corner that can get your material to the label and help you get signed.

    • 3

Contact the label directly by calling them or emailing them. In most cases, you will need to get permission to send in materials. Some record labels accept unsolicited material, while others do not to protect themselves from copyright issues.

    • 4

Prepare your best three tracks, as well as a bio and a good picture. Send it certified mail to make sure they get it and follow up a week later with a quick call or email to make sure they received it.

    • 5

Buy onto a tour or show of one of their artists. If you can get an opening slot, you may be able to impress the artists or label representatives who may be in attendance; maybe even enough to secure a record deal.

    • 6

Approach the artist and thank them for allowing you to play the show and politely ask if you can give them some promo material to look at for the future. Being nice and not pushy may give them a good impression of you, but make sure your performance is top-notch and professional and that you perform your best material first in the set.
