How a Record Producer Searches for New Rappers & Singers

The record producer always seeks talented singers, bands or rappers to put on his record label with the aim to produce the next hit record. His approach to finding talent will vary, depending on the size of his production company and the difficulty he may have trying to spot a potential artist with a current sound.
  1. Music Demos

    • The record producer of a big studio likely receives hundreds of solicited and unsolicited music demos from wannabe singers, bands and rappers each day. Each demo will be listened to albeit briefly by the producer herself or a production assistant. If the artist catches the producer's ear, then she may ask the artist to come into the studio to audition with the possibility of discussing a potential recording contract.

    Advertising

    • If the producer has trouble finding suitable artists with star potential from the demos he receives, then he will start to search outside the studio for artists to collaborate on future projects. He will advertise for a specific artist on his company's website, as well as placing advertisements on other music websites, in newspapers and music magazines. Smaller, independent record companies will tend to advertise in this way.

    Music Agents and Networking

    • A record producer will network at social events held by the music industry to find out about potential artists via word of mouth. Another marketing route for the producer is to keep contact with music and talent agents who will have a variety of musicians on their books.

    Gigs

    • It is part of the record producer's role to take note of current music trends in the industry. Therefore, she will keep keep a close eye on the music gigs happening in the local area. She may attend gigs like open mic nights or small music concerts after being invited to do so by new artists. Reality TV shows and music competitions are also a pool of new musical talent which the record producer will be keen to spot a potential recording artist.
