Verizon FIOS vs. DirecTV

Are you tired of only having one cable company serving your area, with constantly rising rates and no alternatives? Today, there are options in many places, whether it be from satellite TV providers, competing cable companies or even telephone companies branching out into TV service. Two prime examples of these options are DirecTV and Verizon's FiOS TV.
  1. DirecTV

    • DirecTV is currently the largest satellite TV provider in North America, with over 18 million subscribers. Customers receive programming from a small satellite dish attached to the outside of the residence, with coaxial cables relaying the signals to a receiver box connected to the TV.

    FiOS

    • FiOS is a new TV service offered by Verizon in select areas and is similar to digital cable but transmitted via fiber-optic cable to the receiver box provided. As of 2009, it has just over two million subscribers.

    DirecTV Programming

    • DirecTV offers over 265 channels in various programming packages, with over 75 of those in high definition, and has a channel (Channel 101) for original programming. It also features optional exclusive sports packages from the NFL and NASCAR, among others.

    FiOS Programming

    • FiOS also has different programming packages to choose from, with up to 320 channels (up to 65 of those in HD) and offers all the premium channels (HBO, Cinemax) also offered by the major cable and satellite providers, including DirecTV.

    Pricing

    • DirecTV currently offers basic plans starting at $29.99, with their top package (including NFL Sunday Ticket, all premium channels and a DVR) at an introductory rate of $59.99 for five months, though it climbs to $109.99 a month after that. FiOS' packages start at $47.99, not including premium channels, but can be combined with high-speed Internet service for as low as $79.99.
