How to Anchor TV to Wall

Mounting a flat-screen television to a wall can open up a great deal of space in a room while offering an ideal location for entertainment purposes. Many flat-screen units come equipped with easy-access ports, and often their own mounting brackets, for use in mounting the television to a wall. Though the task requires a certain degree of physical work, it isn't much more difficult than mounting shelving or hanging a picture.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the ideal location to mount the television by choosing an area of the room that is easily viewable from multiple angles. It's best to choose a height equal to the eye-level of a seated viewer. Check any sources of natural or artificial lighting that might create glare on the TV screen. Finally, take into account any cords that hang from the television and/or any auxiliary devices connected to it. You'll want a way to either contain or conceal them so they aren't an eyesore or tripping hazard.

    • 2

Remove the standing base of the television, if it comes with one attached. Locate the four large holes for the mounting brackets that are found on the back of the television. Carefully place the television face down on a flat surface that is covered with a soft blanket to protect the screen.

    • 3

Attach the smaller mounting bracket to the back of the television. Ensure that the bracket is located directly in the center of the TV. Locate the mounting bolts that came with the bracket. There may be a number of different sizes; be certain to find the correct size that threads evenly into the television to avoid any damage. Place the bolts through the bracket and tighten with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Use the stud finder to locate a stud in the wall where you plan to anchor the television. Use a pencil to mark the location of the stud. Place the mount in the center of the stud, using the measuring tape to leave a precise mark.

    • 5

Place the larger bracket on the wall, lined up with the markings from the stud finder. Hold the bracket against the wall and screw the largest bolts into the stud. It's best to drill pilot holes before doing the actual drilling to avoid any possibility of cracking in the stud.

    • 6

Lift the television so that it is level with the wall-mounted bracket. Carefully attach it to the wall and tighten the nuts connecting the television to the bracket.
