How to Hook Up Rabbit Ears to a Converter Box

With the switch from analog to digital television (DTV) broadcasting in the United States, television viewers who don't have a cable or satellite system have needed to convert their analog TVs. You will be able to hook up "rabbit ear" antennae to a digital converter box with the connection of a few cables. Converter boxes vary in price from about $40 to as much as $85. However, Consumer Reports found that many of the inexpensive boxes provided a picture quality that was equal, or superior, to many of the more expensive ones.

Instructions

  1. Connecting the Digital Converter Box

    • 1

Turn everything off. Make sure your TV is turned off before you begin the process of connecting your digital converter box. If you are using amplified rabbit ears, turn those off, too.

    • 2

Disconnect the rabbit ears from the TV.

    • 3

Connect the rabbit ears to the digital converter box. There should be an input on the back of the converter box that fits the cable extending from your rabbit ears. If not, you may need to track down the appropriate adapter.

    • 4

Connect the converter box to the TV. The box should come with cables that fit your TV.

    • 5

Plug in the digital converter box. It is a powered piece of equipment.

    Tuning In

    • 6

      Turn everything on.

    • 7

Scan for channels. You are now tuning in channels through the digital converter box, and the channels will need to be scanned into the box. To do this, follow the instructions that came with the box.

    • 8

Adjust the rabbit ears. The location of the antennae is crucial to the quality of reception. Ideally, the antennae should be placed near a window and as high off the ground as possible. Putting the antennae too close to other electronic appliances, including your DVD player or converter box, could interfere with the reception.
