American Teen Programs

Filled with drama and fun, American teen television programs monopolize much of prime time TV. In an article on the My High School Journalism website, from "The Phoenix - The Young Women's Leadership School of Astoria," Lisbeth Perez claims in "TV Replaces Parents in Sex Education" that teen television programs have replaced parents and many schools in sex education.

    • Gossip Girl always wakes to drama in the city that never sleeps.

      Based on the book series of the same name by Cecily Von Zeigesar, Gossip Girl has been named by New York Magazine blogs as "the greatest show of our time" since its debut on the CW network in 2007. Gossip Girl opens up its viewers to the overindulgent life of its characters on the Upper East Side of New York City. The show combines drama, excess, passion, romance and fashion, and has won the Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Show Drama in its first and second season, according to the IMDb website.

    Glee

    • Glee fuses the idea of a musical with teenage drama.

      Brought to you on Twentieth Century Fox by the creator of "Nip/Tuck," Ryan Murphy, Glee is a musical comedy that champions the underdog. When the McKinley High School glee club faces extinction at the hands of the school's cheerleading coach, teacher Will Schuester fights against all odds to bring the glee club back to its former glory. Glee won the Golden Globe for Best Series - Comedy or Musical in its freshman year.

    90210

    • There's nowhere in LA like Beverly Hills, 90210.

      A remake of the 90's classic Beverly Hills 90210, 90210 debuted in fall 2007 on the CW network. The 90210 series has the same executive producer as the quirky favorite Gilmore Girls and follows the lives of the students at West Beverly High. The characters may not be the same but the zip code still is, from sunny skies to relationships gone awry. 90210 is about the life of privilege in LA's most exclusive zip code.

    The Secret Life of an American Teenager

    • Teen pregnancy and drama on The Secret Life of an American Teenager.

      The Secret Life of an American Teenager debuted in the summer of 2008 on the ABC family network. It won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer TV show in both its freshman and sophomore years. When Amy Juergens gets pregnant after a one night stand with the school's biggest player, the lives of her friends and family begin to seem a little more chaotic as everyone's secrets begin to boil over to the surface.

    Teen Choice Awards

    • The Teen Choice Awards is an awards show for teens where viewers are able to vote for their favorite TV shows, actors, athletes, and musicians. Categories include Choice Music R&B Artist, Choice Best TV Show Drama, Choice Best Movie Actress Action Adventure and Choice Best TV Actor Comedy. The Teen Choice Awards usually takes place in the first week of August each year.

    Life Unexpected

    • In 2010, Life Unexpected debuted as a mid-season addition to the CW network's programming line-up. Life Unexpected is a coming-of-age story about a girl named Lux who was given up as a baby but never adopted. Lux is now faced with reconciling with the parents who gave her away. While Lux negotiates between the changes in her life, she is caught in the middle of her mother Cate's own love triangle with Lux's father, Baze, and Cate's radio show co-host, Ryan.

    Greek

    • Greek - College life in fraternities and sororities on ABC.

      Greek premiered in 2007 on the ABC family network, and is set at Cyprus-Rhodes University where its characters figure out what it's really like to live within the brotherhoods and sisterhoods of fraternities and sororities. Written by the producer and creator of Summerland Sean Smith, the series follows the lives of seven college students and the social pressures they face as part of a sorority.

    The Vampire Diaries

    • In Vampire Diaries, the vampires don't need moonlight, they walk in daylight.

      The Vampire Diaries TV series premiered on the CW network in fall 2009 and is based on the book series of the same name by L.J. Smith. The Vampire Diaries tells the tale of two brothers who are fated to love the same woman for all eternity as they defend the town of Mystic Falls from other vampires. The story dates back to 1864 when Stefan and Damon Salvatore fall for Katherine Pierce, a vampire, and upon their return to Mystic Falls in present day Stefan and Damon fall for the same girl again. Elena Gilbert bears a striking resemblance to Katherine, except that she isn't a vampire.

    America's Next Top Model

    • ANTM gives American girls the chance to succeed in the fashion industry.

      America's Next Top Model (ANTM) is a reality series that was created by Tyra Banks in 2003. It has aired on the CW network since its sixth season. ANTM follows the cat fights and development of groups of American women as they are given the basic tools to make it in the modeling industry. In 2010, André Leon Talley, former editor-at-large and now contributing editor at Vogue magazine, joined the judging panel of ANTM. Former judges included Paulina Porizkova and Twiggy.

    Entourage

    • Vincent Chase lives it up in Hollywood on the HBO series Entourage.

      Entourage premiered on HBO in July 2004 and is said to be based on the life of Mark Wahlberg. Elliot Feldman states on Associated Content's website that "much of the show back story and characters are based on Wahlberg's experiences as an up and coming young movie star in Hollywood." Entourage follows the life of semi-successful actor Vincent Chase, played by Adrian Grenier, and his entourage of family and friends. Vince tries to build himself as a commodity in Hollywood while enjoying the perks that come with stardom.
