How do I Create a PBS Television Show?

Creating a Public Broadcasting System (PBS) television program requires structured creative talent as well as astute entertainment business competence. According to the PBS mission statement, the company looks for programs that not only inform but also inspire and educate. This standard demands in-depth planning and experience before a show can even be considered to be made. Thousands of proposals are submitted every year to PBS in hopes of developing a television program. Because of this strong competition, producers must be well-prepared and organized to get their program idea accepted.

Instructions

    • 1

Hire a writer to develop the story and write a synopsis. PBS requires a treatment for all submissions. A treatment includes the story line from beginning to end, story structure, theme, style, format, voice, and point-of-view. Write a detailed synopsis of each episode if your proposed project is a series.

    • 2

Provide a timetable for each production phase. Create a budget that details the costs of crew, cast and equipment, as well as information about insurance and in-house funding. Supply detailed resumes of selected production staff who plan to work on the show.

    • 3

Give a business plan that reflects the current status of the project and potential funding sources. PBS needs to know plans for completion of the show and availability in gaining more funds. Add any sample work from previous projects that demonstrate production experience and ability.

    • 4

Combine the information about your proposed program into a proposal packet. Fill out the release form and summary sheet provided by PBS on its website. A project will not be reviewed without these finished forms.

    • 5

Mail or fax the proposal along with the release and summary forms to:
