How to Adjust Indoor Antennas for the Best Reception

People use antennas for improving the digital signals from local broadcasting stations on their televisions. Adding an antenna to an HDTV or digital converter box gives a person a larger range of channels and gives a better quality picture on the television. When an antenna is installed, a person must find the best location in the house for the best reception. This requires a little bit of time and work, but the improvement in reception is worth it. Sometimes, moving the antenna across the room adds three or more channels to the television.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the antenna is securely connected to the TV or digital converter box with a long coaxial cable. Scan the channels through your television set or digital converter box. See which local channels are available in your area. Flip through your channels and write the channel numbers you receive down on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Draw a star next to the channels you've written down that are getting excellent reception. Change the channel to the weakest channel the TV is receiving. Raise the antenna high -- close to the ceiling. Check to see if the television is getting a stronger signal on that channel.

    • 3

Turn the antenna in different directions. Watch the television closely for any changes.

    • 4

Relocate the antenna closer to a window or another area in the room if the reception is still weak. Walk around the room with the antenna, watching the television for any changes in reception. Continue this process until you find a spot that gives the television good reception.

    • 5

Look at the paper and rescan the channels. Check each channel and make sure the reception is still good. If all channels have good reception, keep the antenna where it is. If some of the channels went out, continue moving the antenna until you get better reception.

    • 6

Move the wire arms of the antennas around once you get a good signal. It sometimes makes reception better. Scan the channels one more time once the reception is at the best level.
