The Best Plasma Televisons

Plasma televisions were among the first flatscreen televisions on the market. Unlike the similar LCD television screens, they are less expensive and offer many benefits such as a wider viewing range that is distortion-free and they also offer a higher color contrast and deeper range of blacks for a more theater-like experience. There are numerous plasma televisions on the market today--late 2010--but only a few have been named as the best by reviewers.
  1. Samsung PN50C490

    • This 50-inch plasma television with 720 pixels is 3-D ready and one of the few on the market that has a suggested retail price under $1,000. Reviewers selected this model for overall clarity of picture, 3-D performance with Blu-ray and Playstation 3-D games, as well as its price range.

Samsung also began offering two pairs of 3-D glasses with the purchase of this television, which quickly earned this plasma television top marks throughout the industry.

    Panasonic Viera TC-P50VT25

    • This is another 50-inch model that is 3-D capable, but the retail price ranges from $1,700 to $2,500 depending on where you purchase it. The Panasonic Viera was rated highly for its black level performance and depth of color, as well as its anti-reflective screen.

The only low marks reviewers could find with this particular model was the pricing as well as the fact that it used more power than similar plasma and LCD televisions.

    LG Infinia 50PK950

    • This 50-inch plasma television retails for between $1,300 and $1,600 and while it is not 3-D capable, it did receive high marks for picture clarity and the amount of picture controls available to sharpen the image on the screen. Reviewers did not like the "magic wand" remote offered by the manufacturer, however, and also felt it was not as power-efficient as it could have been.

However, reviewers did note that this is the best plasma television offered by LG and it competes well with Panasonic and the other well known name brands.

    Panasonic TC-P50GT25

    • This 1080-pixel, 50-inch plasma television received rave reviews for its power efficiency, clarity of picture and black-level performance. This particular model can be converted from 2-D to 3-D and retails from $1,600 to $1,800.

The downside noted by reviewers on this model is that while it is a great 2-D plasma television, and the ability to convert it to 3-D is there, it does not compete as well against other 3-D plasma televisions.
