How to Make a Nautical-Themed Pashmina Afghan

"I'm on a Boat" hit the airwaves on Saturday Night Live in February of 2009 and it went viral on YouTube immediately afterward. While Andy Samberg, T-Pain and the rest of the cast went through numerous costume changes for this digital short, one of the most requested wardrobe items is Andy's "nautical-themed pashmina afghan." This navy blue pashmina scarf is covered in anchor designs, and it has been copied all over the internet. You can make your own copy to recreate the movie short or just to be stylish like the members of Lonely Island.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your navy blue pashmina around your neck. Arrange the folds of the scarf until it is comfortable and has the look you like.

    • 2

Place the anchor appliques on the surface of the pashmina to show them to your best advantage. You will have appliqués mostly on the ends of the scarf and on the part near your face, just like the one Andy Samberg wore in the video. Pin each anchor appliqué in place, then take off the scarf.

    • 3

Stitch each anchor appliqué to the scarf using a fine needle and navy thread. Use tiny stitches to attach each appliqué. Do not worry abut making the appliques appear evenly spaced; the design should be most attractive when you are wearing it, not when it's unfolded.

    • 4

Put your pashmina back around your neck and rearrange the folds to show off your anchors.
