Difference Between ESPN & ESPN News

ESPN was founded in 1979 in Bristol, Conn. It holds more than 50 business entities. ABC Inc. owns 80 percent of ESPN, and Hearst Corp. owns the other 20 percent. ESPN and its subsidiary networks broadcast events such as Monday Night Football, NBA games and numerous collegiate sports.
  1. ESPN the Channel

    • Although ESPN Inc. is the flagship for the ESPN family, the cable and satellite television channel ESPN was seen in 100 million homes in the United States as of May 2011. It was available in both high-definition and 3-D.

    ESPN News

    • ESPN News, a separate channel in the ESPN Inc. family of networks, provides 24 hours of news and highlights. As of May 2011, along with its news broadcasts, ESPN News also featured shows such as "Mike & Mike in the Morning," hosted by Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg. "SportsCenter," "ESPN First Take" and "The Blitz" can be seen on ESPN News at various days and times.

    A Multitude of Events

    • Broadcasting events from around the world, the primary ESPN channel offers a wide array of events for just about any sports fan. During the National Football Leagueseason, "Monday Night Football" is shown weekly. During college basketball season, men's and women's games can be seen on different days and nights of the week. The news program "SportsCenter" provides scores, highlights and analysis of the day's sporting events, and it previews upcoming events. Some of the other sporting events shown on the primary ESPN channel throughout the year include Major League Baseball, Bassmaster fishing and the World Series of Poker.

    Additional Networks in the Family

    • Aside from the primary ESPN channel and ESPN News, ESPN Inc. operates a variety of other network channels. ESPN2 broadcasts many of the same sports that ESPN does, as well as smaller professional sporting leagues or European competitions such as English Premier League soccer. ESPNU showcases college athletics from around the United States. ESPN Inc. also offers a Spanish channel, ESPN Deportes.
