How to Facilitate Cultural Diversity in the Media

The mass media has a reputation for not being particularly accurate when it comes to cultural representations. Sitcoms are the breeding grounds for stereotypes, and local news capitalizes on crime and racial tension. With so many different people thrown into our melting pot, its hard to imagine a media that's even capable of respect and fair portrayal. Still, there are groundbreaking programs and events that celebrate cultural diversity with a sensitive and timely approach. According to "Cultural Diversity: Its Social Psychology" by Xenia Chryssochoou, social psychologists and those working in the study of cultural diversity "seek to understand the conditions under which people of different cultures and backgrounds can live peacefully together within the same political organization" and in this instance be served by the same media.

Instructions

    • 1

Find television shows and/or movies you find culturally innovative or representative. Support them by watching them and purchasing their merchandise tie-ins.

    • 2

Email television networks and Hollywood studios to let them know your feelings. Mention specific issues you have with their programming. Also tell them what shows you think are positively portraying minorities and encouraging cultural diversity.

    • 3

Go to peaceful protests and rallies centered around media establishments or current events. Your respectful approach will show positively on the local community and the chosen cause.

    • 4

Write to your local news outlets to inform them of cultural events. Keep them up to date on community meetings, political groups and cultural/racial-inspired gatherings. Consider both local television affiliates and major newspapers.

    • 5

Create a website that expounds social and cultural diversity. Make a list of corporations, groups or communities that are supporting the growth of cultural awareness.
