How Long Do Vulcans Live?

Vulcans are a fictional humanoid species, known for their sense of logic, from the science fiction franchise "Star Trek." Spock, a half-Vulcan and half-human hybrid portrayed by Leonard Nimoy in the original "Star Trek" TV series as well as later media, is the most famous Vulcan in popular culture. Other famous Vulcans include Spock's father, Sarek; Tuvok from "Star Trek: Voyager"; and T'Pol from "Star Trek: Enterprise." Vulcans are portrayed in various media with lifespans ranging upwards of 200 years.
  1. Spock in 2009 "Star Trek" film

    • In the 2009 "Star Trek" film, Spock notes that the events that caused him to be thrown back in time from the original timeline occurred in 2387. Given his birth occurred in 2230 of the original timeline, Spock is around 160 years old at this point.

    Sarek in "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

    • In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" Season 3 episode "Sarek," Spock's father Sarek is portrayed as afflicted by Bendii Syndrome, a fictional Vulcan disorder that causes sufferers to lose control of their emotions. Bendii Syndrome is noted to only affect Vulcans over the age of 200; Sarek lives to an age of 204.

    Zakal in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"

    • In the novelization of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" by J.M. Dillard, the ancient Vulcan lord Zakal is stated to have lived "eight hundred and eighty-seven seasons" prior to his death. A footnote translates that lifespan to "approximately 276 Earth years."

    Other Mentions

    • According to Memory Alpha, the Star Trek wiki, several other instances in "Star Trek" canon establish the length of the Vulcan lifespan. In the "Star Trek: Enterprise" Season 1 episode "Broken Bow," for example, Vulcans are mentioned to live upwards of 200 years. However, in another "Star Trek Enterprise" episode, "Similitude," it is mentioned that at one point Vulcans only had an average lifespan of 40 years.
