Where did ragtime come from?

Ragtime originated in African American communities in the late 19th century, particularly in the Midwest and South of the United States. It emerged from a combination of African-American musical traditions, including cakewalks, minstrel shows, and the influence of European classical music. Ragtime incorporated elements such as syncopated rhythms, intricate piano playing techniques, and lively melodies. It gained popularity in the early 20th century and became a significant part of American popular music before giving rise to other genres like jazz.
