Make sure your script is on your computer. As long as you have a copy of your script saved as any kind of text file on your computer, you will be fine. The website accepts files saved in the format of Final Draft, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works and even .rtf, or "rich text files." There is no discrepancy between PC and Mac files, either. Both computers should be able to upload onto the Writer's Guild sites.

Log onto the website. The Writer's Guild of America has two websites, both work exactly the same and give the same protection for the same exact amount of time. The website for the Writer's Guild of America, West is simply wga.org, while The Writer's Guild East's website is wgaeast.org. Each homepage is designed slightly differently, but once you're there, you will see an icon for "script registration." Click on it.

Upload and register your script. After you click on "script registration," the website will prompt you through several screens where you will enter the name of the script, what type of script it is and personal information about yourself, like contact information and information about where to send the certificate of registration. Fill these out completely and continue to the next screen. Then it will ask you to upload the script. Do so. Choose a password you will remember, because they cannot give you your password again.

Pay for the registration. Once you've uploaded your piece, you pay for the registration. If you aren't a member of the Writer's Guild, the registration cost is $22.00. After you've paid, the registration is complete. You will receive a certificate in the mail vouching for your registration. The Writer's Guild of America script registration protects your script for ten years from the date on the certificate.

Re-register your script when needed. Unfortunately, the script that you upload into the Writer's Guild of America's database (either East or West) is protect "as is." This means two things: first, make sure you do a thorough proof reading of your final draft before you upload the file into the Writer's Guild of America's database. Any mistakes will be part of what's protected. Also, if you make any changes, or write a new draft of the script, you must re-register that version of the script if you want it covered by the protection provided by the Writer's Guild of America.
