How to Submit a Script to Harpo Productions

You've written a killer screenplay that you just know would be a perfect fit for Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films production company. The question is, how do you get it to her? And where do you find the address anyway? Although the Hollywood Creative Directory, 65th edition for spring 2009 says that Harpo Films takes no unsolicited submissions, there are a few things you can do to work around that statement.

Things You'll Need

  • Fantastic script
  • Hollywood Creative Directory, subscription to the HCD online or subscription to IMDB Pro

Instructions

    • 1

Write the best query letter that you possibly can about your script. Make sure you have a logline that offers enough information that will make someone at Harpo Films want to read your script. Include a short synopsis in your query letter; again, incorporate just enough of the story in the synopsis that the person reading the letter will want to read the script.

Purchase a one-month subscription to the Hollywood Creative Directory online to find the name of the development head or the creative executive. Even if you have the latest print version of the Hollywood Creative Directory, you should still sign up to make sure that these names have not changed.

    • 3

Sign up for a free two-week trial to the IMDB Pro database if your budget will not allow for the $20 monthly fee for the HCD online. You can check the information on the Pro database for the names of Harpo Films' development head or creative executive. Unfortunately, the IMDB Pro database is not updated as frequently as the HCD online, so the names may be out of date.

Send the query letter by snail mail addressed to one of these two names. The address for Harpo Films is Harpo Films, Inc., 345 N. Maple Drive, Suite 315, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.

Add a self-addressed stamped envelope along with your query letter for their response. With luck, they will request your script; if not, they will let you know they are not interested at this time.
