How to Dress for Professional Headshots

For a performer, a professional headshot is as important as a resume. Casting directors look at headshots to determine whether an actor is appropriate for a certain role, so it is important for your headshot to stand out from the rest. Since you want to attract positive rather than negative attention, try to look attractive and natural in your headshot and place the emphasis on your best features.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a minimal amount of makeup, as though you are going to a job interview. If you have heavy eyebrows or any hair above your lips, have it waxed off a couple days before your headshot. Men and children do not need to wear any makeup.

    • 2

Cut your hair a week before your shoot.

    • 3

Drink a lot of water on the day of the shoot and eat a light meal so you look hydrated and refreshed.

    • 4

Wash and iron all of the clothing you plan to wear to the shoot.

    • 5

Choose a bright, "preppy" top from a popular store at the mall for a commercial headshot. For a theatrical headshot, you may select a top that matches your personal style, but in a muted color. As a general rule, fitted v-necks are the most flattering style for both men and women, except for men who have long, thin necks. Men also look nice in a dress shirt and tie. Avoid wearing anything patterned or anything that matches your skin tone and choose a shade of clothing in one of your favorite colors, since it will make you feel most confident.

    • 6

Don't wear any jewelry, as it distracts from your face.

    • 7

Women should wear a bra in the same color as their top.
