George R.R. Martin, the author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series on which the show is based, has published five books in the series:

* A Storm of Swords (2000)
* A Feast for Crows (2005)
* A Dance with Dragons (2011)
He is currently working on the sixth book, The Winds of Winter. However, there is no confirmed release date. Martin has stated that it is still in progress, and fans are eagerly awaiting its publication.
