How to Pitch Reality TV Ideas to ABC

Reality shows can be seen across the spectrum of network and cable channels. From "The Bachelor" and "The Biggest Loser" to "Dancing With the Stars," reality shows showcase both ordinary citizens and the famous in a creative game show format. With the increased satiation of shows on channels across the television spectrum, coming up with new and creative ideas presents a challenge. However, the financial and career benefits of creating an idea accepted by an ABC executive for a new show entice many to try.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch reality shows on several different channels. Look for common factors for a show's success. The issues in the show should relate to all people. Good reality shows should be both fun to play and fun to watch.

    • 2

Think of new and creative ideas for a reality show. Corie Henson with ABC Entertainment says, "We're really looking for something that will be the next step in reality . . . think big and take a unique approach."

    • 3

Start with a specific concept, then come up with several scenarios from the specific idea. For example, a specific concept of homelessness can go in several different directions, such as a show about homeless people getting to live with a wealthy business owner, or homeless shelters getting a facelift.

    • 4

Create catchy titles for your ideas. Most reality shows have short, specific titles, such as "Wife Swap." The title should immediately grab the attention of the audience, and make them want to watch to see what will happen.

    • 5

Decide what the outcome of your show will be. Come up with a reward or ending that will draw the audience into the story.

    • 6

Format a proposal for ABC Entertainment. The proposal should include your name and contact information, the title of your reality show idea, a one- to two-sentence description of your concept, and a specific synopsis and outline of your show. Illustrate to the producers what specific episodes will look like. Paint a picture of building tension and excitement as you move from one episode to the next to the conclusion.

    • 7

Contact ABC entertainment to find out the specific ABC producer you should present your completed proposal to. Send a cover letter with your proposal and have your first sentence pitch be a catchy line or question to grab the producer's attention. Keep your cover letter short and to the point. Leave contact information easily visible for the person to get back with you on your idea.
