What Kind of Multitool Does Survivorman Use?

Discovery Channel's "Survivorman" television series features the adventures of survivalist Les Stroud, who spends up to seven days in distant and foreign locales, surviving off of the land and filming his own show single-handedly. His survivalist skills are the key to the series. The limited equipment Stroud carries fluctuates per episode, but he always keeps a group of objects with him at all times.
  1. Multitool

    • The Leatherman Wave contains 17 tools. These include two knives, several sets of pliers, standard and heavy-duty wire cutters, a wire stripper, scissors, two files (one of which is diamond coated), a saw, openers for bottles and cans and a small ruler. The Leatherman Wave additionally includes two Phillips head screwdriver bits, a flat-head screwdriver bit and two eyeglass screwdriver bits. Stroud often uses these tools in unconventional ways.

    Preferred Knife

    • Stroud's preferred knife is a Buck 119 Special. He has carried it in most of the episodes of the series. This affordable knife is known, mainly through Stroud's praisings, as a knife that stays sharper longer and that has incredible versatility -- without getting in the way while sheathed and not in use.

    Harmonica

    • The only other standard item in Stroud's carrying gear is his harmonica, which he plays on every one of his adventures. His preferred harmonica is a Hohner Special 20. Stroud has gone on record as saying that the harmonica is one of the primary stress relievers he has on expeditions; stress relief being a key part of clearing his mind and focusing on the tasks at hand. Stroud has made a secondary career out of his harmonica playing, releasing several albums.

    Additional Tools

    • Stroud occasionally uses alternative tools in his survival gear. He has been seen with a variety of axes over the episodes. He's also used a compass on more than one occasion. During a cold weather adventure, he carried a rifle due to the high bear population in the area. These additional tools fluctuate per episode, as one of Stroud's key points when making "Survivorman" was experimentation with new tools and techniques.
