Numerous Blu-rays contain a "making of" documentary and "Magnolia" is no exception. The documentary -- entitled "That Moment" -- is directed by Mark Rance and chronicles the various stages of production regarding the film. The documentary starts a little after the completion and release of "Boogie Nights" -- also directed by Paul Thomas Anderson -- and concludes shortly after the completion and release of "Magnolia." The documentary itself is a little more than an hour and contains candid interviews with Anderson, his girlfriend of the time -- Fiona Apple -- and the cast and crew.
Tom Cruise earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Frank TJ Mackey, a man who specializes in conquering the female sex. The Blu-ray version of "Magnolia" features two different segments dedicated to Mackey. The first is a filmed seminar that he is giving to "nerdy" guys who want to learn how to be more attractive to the opposite sex. The second is a fake infomercial for the seminar. The running time of the seminar is roughly four minutes and the infomercial runs for a minute and a half.
Theatrical trailers and TV spots are included on the Blu-ray version of "Magnolia." TV spots are simply commercials for the movie that aired before -- and during -- its release. The theatrical trailers include a teaser trailer and a full trailer. A teaser trailer is basically a short trailer. Aimee Mann earned an Oscar nomination for her original song "Save Me." Anderson directed a music video for that song, which is contained on the Blu-ray disc. The video runs close to five minute and was shot during the production of the film.
If you already own the two-disc Platinum Edition DVD of "Magnolia," you already own all of the special features that are contained on the Blu-ray version. The main difference between the Blu-ray and DVD version is in the film presentation. The Blu-ray version has higher-quality sound and images than the DVD version. You should also know that the special features on the Blu-ray disc have not been transferred to high definition. So while the movie runs in HD, the special features do not.
