Why does everyone get Avatar the movie and Last Airbender mixed up?

The movie Avatar and the TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender are two completely separate works. It's understandable why one might get them mixed up because both are popular works and have similar titles, but to say everyone confuses the two is not true.
