On Nov. 3, 2008, the Official Netflix Blog announced that they would no longer continue selling their used DVDs through the website. Sales continued through Nov. 30 of the same year but the operation ceased as scheduled in December.
While the Netflix Blog representative did not specify why the company stopped selling used DVDs, the company stressed that it was excited about the opportunity to focus even more on its rental service and widening the catalog of titles available.
Reports have surmised that Netflix is still selling its old DVD titles to wholesalers, so the best place to find old Netflix titles at this time is probably a used DVD store.
While Netflix claimed it plans to continue renting DVDs and believes the format will remain popular for at least the next five to 10 years, it's no secret the company is moving more toward its service that allows members to stream movies and TV shows instantly on a computer or TV via a Netflix-ready device. The company announced in August 2009 that it's adding many of ABC's TV shows to that service, including the first five seasons of "Lost," Seasons 4 and 5 of "Desperate Housewives," Season 5 of "Grey's Anatomy" and Seasons 1 and 2 of "Legend of the Seeker."
