How to Convert Old TVs to HDTV

The modern television has seen a number of substantial technological advances in recent times. One of the most impressive advances is the transfer from analog to digital television. Analog television required sets to tune into a channel through physical antennas, while digital television connects to sets via digital signals that provide extremely clear and vibrant picture quality. As of June 12, 2009, the Federal Communications Commission required all television stations to go digital, meaning all TV users needed to convert to DTV. While converting to DTV requires purchasing a new set or obtaining a digital converter box from your cable company, the transition is not that complicated.

Contact a cable provider and inquire about digital cable packages. Comcast, for example, offers a variety of low- to high-priced TV plans with everything from basic cable channels to advanced cable packages with premium channels such as HBO, Showtime and Cinemax. Discuss package options with a customer representative and select the package that suits your budget.

Acquire a digital converter box from your cable provider. All old -- or analog -- TV sets require the installation of a digital converter box to use your digital cable package. Most boxes are included with a cable TV plan and sit atop a television set and can be installed via several simple step-by-step connections detailed in the instruction guide provided with the converter box. Ask your customer service representative if the company provides free professional installation.

Purchase a high definition-ready television if you would like a complete TV makeover. To access high-definition digital cable channels without a digital converter box, your TV must be HD-ready. You may access selected HD-channels via your converter box, but to view every channel and program with the clarity and brilliance of HD, your television must be designed with this feature. Visit any home electronics store to view HDTV options. Depending on your cable package, a converter box may still be required to access your specific cable connection. Check with your cable provider for details.
