Does the new Planet of Apes movie have any link with original movies?

The recent Planet of the Apes movies, starting with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), are a prequel series to the original Planet of the Apes movies. Although not linked through a shared continuity, the new trilogy references elements and themes from the original franchise while offering a new origin story for the conflict between humans and apes.
