Comedian Chevy Chase received top billing in this movie for his role as the wacky playboy Ty Webb, who feels inclined to share his wealth of wisdom with his long-suffering caddy. Chase had made a name for himself by joining "Saturday Night Live," but "Caddyshack" was his breakthrough in movies. He later starred in "Fletch" and "National Lampoon's Vacation."
The part of the obnoxious Al Czervik was Dangerfield's second movie role, but he was widely recognized as a stand-up comedian, with frequent appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Dean Martin Show" and "The Tonight Show." His catch phrase was "I get no respect." After "Caddyshack," he appeared in "Easy Money," "Back to School," "Natural Born Killers" and "Casper." Dangerfield died in 2004.
Pompous snob Judge Elihu Smails is played by Ted Knight, a TV actor mainly known for his part as Ted Baxter in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and his "Ted Knight Show," which ran in 1978. After "Caddyshack," Knight continued his television work in "The Love Boat" and "Too Close for Comfort." He died in 1986.
After being nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in "The Great Santini," Michael O'Keefe was cast as Danny Noonan, the poor caddy who tries to save up for college by working at the golf club. O'Keefe has since continued to act in supporting roles in both television production and on the big screen. He has been seen opposite George Clooney in "Michael Clayton" and in guest appearances on the television series "Numbers," "House," "Criminal Minds" and "Law & Order."
Bill Murray, the brother of one of the script writers behind "Caddyshack," received some of the funniest moments and most memorable quotes in the movie. Murray plays Carl Spackler, a crazed groundskeeper's assistant whose devotion to the fight against a gopher knows no limits. Following the movie's success, Murray, together with his brothers, opened a Caddyshack-themed restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida. Murray went on to give memorable performances in "Ghostbusters," "Groundhog Day," "Ed Wood" and "The Royal Tenenbaums." He received a Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination for his role in "Lost in Translation" in 2003.
Actress Sarah Holcomb joined the cast of Caddyshack after finishing "Animal House," another madcap comedy. The role of Maggie O'Hooligan, Danny Noonan's feisty Irish girlfriend and co-worker in the club, was her last part on screen -- Holcomb was never seen in films again.
The part of Danny's caddying rival, Tony D'Annunzio, is played by Scott Colomby. Like most of the cast in "Caddyshack," Colomby had done mainly television work, most notably in "Sons and Daughters," "Szysznyk" and "One Day at a Time." He went on to act in the "Porky's" trilogy before returning to television work again and running a workshop for aspiring actors in Los Angeles.
Morgan plays Lacey Underall, a man-eating femme fatale and niece to the judge whose actions unwittingly haphazard Danny's chances to receive the scholarship. After "Caddyshack," Morgan moved on to play the female lead in Disney's "Tron" before returning to act almost exclusively in television series, including "Falcon Crest" and "Matlock."
