The U-2 spy plane was not shot down in 1960. The U-2 incident occurred on May 1, 1960, when a Soviet SA-2 surface-to-air missile shot down a United States U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers while it was flying over Soviet airspace near Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg).
