What Government Jobs Are There for a Person With a Film Degree?

A person with a film degree can take advantage of opportunities for film, media and public relations work in the government. At the state and local level, videographers, editors, producers and animators can work for government agencies and TV channels. The U.S. armed forces offer similar jobs for enlisted men and women to document various activities and events of the military. A number of state and federal agencies and state universities seek film professionals for consultancy, media advising, audio-video specialty and education jobs.
  1. Mass Communications Specialist in the Military

    • The U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps offer a number of Mass Communication Specialist (MC) jobs in broadcast journalism for military operations and exercises. These military personnel shoot photos and videos for documentation and production of audiovisual materials. Many of them specifically work as public affairs specialists, photographers, videographers, graphic artists, and animators.

    Public Information or Media Specialist for Local and State Government

    • Many cities, counties and states employ film professionals under their communications, public information or media departments. Aside from making audiovisual presentations for various government projects, they also typically produce government TV shows and document events and activities around their jurisdictions. They may also take charge of documenting court and office cameras documenting the many key operations within their respective jurisdictions. Some of the more specific government jobs hired by these departments include camera, lighting and grip equipment operators and specialists, editors, graphic artists, video producers, production coordinators and production assistants.

    Professor or Instructor in a Public College or University or the Military

    • State universities and military schools require film professionals accomplished in their fields and/or the academic world to work as professors and instructors teaching hands-on skills and theoretical courses relative to film and video production. Students typically learn video documentation, storytelling, production management and production and post-production equipment operation through educators who are experts in their fields. These positions, especially in higher education, may require at least a master's degree.

    Audio-visual Specialist, Adviser or Consultant for a Government Agency

    • A number of government agencies offer a variety of film-related jobs in regular, contractual and consultancy positions. Film graduates with thorough experiences and accomplishments in the field can be hired as public relations specialists, video specialists, film and video consultants and audiovisual advisers for a number of projects. Some can also be called upon for jobs in solving and/or analyzing mysteries and crimes, or for various types of special projects.
