How to Make a Slot Machine in After Effects

While creating a slot machine graphic in Adobe After Effects is most easily done with some help from Adobe Photoshop, the composition in After Effects only contains a few layers and keyframes. It is necessary to find or create images for each layer that are consistent with one another. What makes the slot machine graphic effective is the motion blur effect, and with clean images and masks, the graphic can look very realistic.

Instructions

  1. The Base Slot Machine

    • 1

Find a still image of a close-up slot machine. Choose a high-resolution image that contains only the slot machine in the image.

    • 2

Open After Effects. Select "Composition" and "New Composition" to create a new composition. Title the composition, set your resolution and length and click "OK."

    • 3

Insert the image of the slot machine into your bin in After Effects.

    • 4

Click on the slot machine image in your bin and drag it into your composition.

    • 5

Click on the rectangular mask tool in your toolbar near the top of the screen.

    • 6

Click and drag the rectangular mask tool inside of each of the slots. To ensure that the masks are clean, use the arrow tool to adjust the mask so it masks out only the slot and nothing outside of it; mask out the entire slot. In your composition, set each mask to the "Subtract" option so each mask removes the portion of the slot machine image which it covers.

    The Slots

    • 7

Find images to use in your slots. Common slots have images of cherries, bananas and dollar signs.

    • 8

Open a new Adobe Photoshop document. Set your resolution to 300-by-5,000.

    • 9

Open the images you have chosen to use for your slots.

    • 10

Create divisions for each square in the slot graphic. Create horizontal lines and divide your Photoshop graphic into squares.Use the vertical ruler to help with size, as each horizontal line should be 300 pixels apart, making 300-by-300 squares.

    • 11

Click and drag each slot image into your Photoshop document one by one. Use seven or eight images and repeat them because a slot machine rotates through the same image several times.

    • 12

Select an image and hit Control+T to resize each image so it fits inside a square.

    • 13

Save the document as a .jpg image.

    Animating the Graphic

    • 14

Insert the Photoshop slot graphic into your After Effects bin.

    • 15

Click and drag the slot graphic into your composition underneath your slot machine image.

    • 16

Use the position tool to move the slot graphic underneath one of the masked out portions of the slot machine image. Use the size tool to resize the slot image so it fits inside one of the masked out portions of the slot machine graphic.

    • 17

Copy the slot image and paste it twice, once for each of the remaining masked out portions of the slot machine. Use the position tool on each of the pasted images to move them underneath the remaining masked out holes.

    • 18

Move the cursor in your timeline all the way to the left so it is at the beginning of the graphic.

    • 19

Use the position tool to move each slot image up or down until each image is at the appropriate starting spot.

    • 20

Select each of the slot graphics and click on the "Position" keyframe tool located underneath the title of each image.

    • 21

Move the cursor in your timeline all the way to the right so it reaches the end of the timeline.

    • 22

Use the position tool again to move your slot images to their ending spot. Move each image up until it reaches the square you would like the slot machine to show at the end of the graphic. Keyframes will be created for you after you have done this.

    Finishing Touches

    • 23

Turn on motion blur for all layers. Above each of the layers in your composition is the effects toolbar. The motion blur icon is a series of gradually fading circles. Click on the icon.

    • 24

Turn on motion blur, now, for each individual layer. To the right of each layer title is a set of three blank squares. The right-most square for each layer is the motion blur square, which is labeled by the motion blur graphic. Click inside this square so the motion blur icon appears inside each square.

    • 25

Move the cursor in your timeline all the way to the beginning and select F9 on your keyboard.

    • 26

Move the cursor all the way to the end of your timeline and select F9 again. This makes the motion of the position gradually start and stop for a realistic effect.

    • 27

      Export your composition.
