Check the application deadline on Columbia's website (see "Resources"). The date listed applies to postmark, not date received. Do not send anything before applications begin to be accepting for the following year.
Obtain a copy of your undergraduate transcripts from your school. You are required to have completed your bachelor's degree by the time you matriculate to Columbia.
Ask three people who know you well to write letters of recommendation for you. If you have experience in film, think of someone who could attest to your knowledge of film in their letter.
Assemble your Creative Materials. For the Film M.F.A., this includes an autobiographical essay and a written film scenario (check the admissions website for how your scene should begin). For those who wish to have a concentration in screenwriting, include a dramatic writing sample and a feature film treatment (a summary of a film storyline). The Creative Producing concentration requires a current resume and two feature film treatments for application. Inclusion of a video is optional. If you do include a video, add a note describing your involvement and the contents of the film.
Complete your application online or download and print off a hard copy from Columbia's website. Columbia encourages applicants to complete the application online for faster processing.
