How to Transfer Super 8 Film to Video

When it debuted in 1965, Super 8mm film quickly became the favored format for home filmmakers. Through the late 1960's and 1970's, Super 8mm dominated the market, until it was usurped by video technology in the 1980's. Today, the video dominates the market, but with so many Super 8mm films made in the past, the need has arisen to convert them to video. With a few simple steps, you can transfer your Super 8mm films to video.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a film projection screen. You will need an open space with a clear area about 10 feet in front of the screen with nothing blocking the projected image.

    • 2

Set up a Super 8mm film projector and load your 8mm film.

    • 3

Turn on the projector and line up the projection with the screen. You need a large enough image to be able to pick up details, but not so large as to distort them. There is no need to cover the entire screen with the projected image.

    • 4

Load an analog or digital tape into a video camera. Tape needs vary based on the camera type. A reliable and high quality format is miniDV. Most consumer grade camcorders are miniDV, so finding a camera and tape should not be difficult.

    • 5

Set up the camera on a tripod tripod next to, but not touching, the projector. You want the camera to be close to the projector to make alignment easier, but vibrations from the projector will shake the camera, so do not allow the tripod to touch the projection stand.

    • 6

Set the camera to begin recording, then begin running the film. Allow the film to run through completely, then turn off the projector and halt the video recording. Rewind the tape to confirm the recording took place. If it has, you have successfully converted your Super 8mm film to video.

    • 7

Repeat the steps above for all of the Super 8mm films you wish to convert to video.
