How to Make Short Animation Clips With a Digital Camera

Traditional animation is a consecutive series of drawings on paper that resemble each frame in a motion picture. Amateur animated filmmakers can create animated movies using the "stop motion" method, which uses toy or clay models to make films. You can use simple tools from around the home in the process of creating the animated film, which you can then edit using a movie editing program.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a series of pictures on a clean sheet of paper using a pencil. Illustrate the characters moving as they would frame by frame in a film by creating slight movements on each page. Number the pages at the bottom in case they get mixed up in the process.

    • 2

Set the completed drawings on a hard surface that is clean and dust free to prevent contaminating the pages or the camera lens. Remove items from the table to prevent them from casting shadows onto the pages.

    • 3

Position a table lamp near the drawings to provide a sufficient amount of light to illuminate them. Unscrew the lamp shade to provide even more light for each drawing, and make it easier for the camera to caputre detail.

    • 4

Place the tripod near the drawings. Mount the camera on the tripod. Reposition the tripod and angle of the digital camera to permit the drawings to fill the LCD screen frame during the shoot.

    • 5

Take pictures of each sheet of paper in order. Do not move the camera tripod.

    • 6

Place the digital camera card into your computer's card reader, or use a direct USB link if available, and upload the photos.

    • 7

Create a folder with the name of the project and drag the photo files from their current location into it.

    • 8

Open the film editing program. Import the images. Click on the photo files and select "OK" to add them to the project. Once they appear in the project window, drag them onto the movie time line to create the animated movie.

    • 9

Save the file. Publish the animated movie to view it in a movie player, or upload it to the Internet.
