In the science fiction world of the film, R2-D2 is .96-meters tall and has multiple appendages tipped with tools that make him such a good starship mechanic. He is fitted with magnetized rollers that can cling to metal and anti-gravity boosters that enable him to fly. In addition, R2-D2 has a hologram recorder and transmitter, a fusion welder and a buzz saw.
R2-D2 is composed of a standing unit that actor Kenny Baker manipulates, as well as several remote control units. Baker uses a special suit that permits him to sit inside the unit and work the lights and appendages. For moving scenes, the remote control unit is used. However, during much of the filming of the first three films, the remote control units frequently malfunctioned.
Aluminum was one of the main materials used to make the original R2-D2. According to Don Bies, the most experienced R2-D2 controller, a digital CGI-generated R2-D2 was used for the most recent two prequels.
