Fireproof Resources

Fireproofing is considered “passive fire prevention,” but is an aggressive way to reduce the dangers of fire to the lowest possible level. Several companies sell fireproofing products for walls, upholstery, drapes and furniture, in paints, sprays and enclosures.
Certified systems can increase the fire resistance ratings of a building, used to determine insurance costs.
  1. Fire Blocking Paint

    • DC 333 Fire Blocking Paint prevents flames from spreading vertically up a wall for up to two hours. The paint was created with the technology of Intumescent Fire Retardant, Fire Resistance and Mold Inhibitor Technology. The paint was designed for the inside walls of your home, office or other building.
An “Intumescent reaction” occurs when the paint is exposed to high temperatures or a direct flame. The paint expands, carmelizes, and forms a “char barrier.” The barrier rises off the surface of the paint, blocking the fire from using the paint as a fuel source.
The paint is water-based acrylic, non-toxic, hypoallergenic and has no smell. It looks like regular house paint, but can improve your fire rating, depending on the wall materials painted. The paint will protect everything from drywall to foam. DC 333 is sold by National Fireproofing.

    Fire Retardant Spray

    • Flamex PF Fire Retardant Spray is designed for porous, indoor fabrics and wood. The spray is clear, when it dries, and bolsters the fire rating of Douglas fir or pine to Class A or B, according to the manufacturer, National Fireproofing. Flamex PF becomes a part of the wood’s molecular structure. It’s also suitable for use on fabric.
When a spray-infused material is exposed to open flame, the retardant reduces the flame spread on wood, and extinguishes the flame on fabric. The spray is non-toxic, non-hazardous to the environment, and easy to use.

    Combination Fire Safe

    • The SentrySafe Company sells a variety of fireproof safes. The Combination Fire-Safe CS0430 features four live-locking bolts and a three-number combination lock. Inside, the safe is organized into a multi-position tray, key rack and a compartment for small objects. The safe withstands an hour of fire for CDs, DVDs, USB drives and memory sticks, up to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit. The safe can also survive a drop from 15 feet, intact. You can bolt it to the floor, and it holds standard-sized and A4-sized papers.
