When does a director work to create metaphor for production?

A director will not be working to specifically implement any metaphor to production. Metaphor can be discussed on an interpretation of the work by an audience (e.g. academic and audience critique; reviews), but it is not something intended and worked on, in any practical sense, from the perspective of the crew on set, including the director(s).
