How many movie theaters built in the 1920s survived?
Of the approximately 20,000 movie theaters built during the 1920s in the United States, only about 2,000 are still open today. This represents only about 10% of those originally built. Many closed down due to changing economic conditions, including increased competition from newer theaters and alternative home entertainment options like television. Additionally, the decline of vaudeville as a popular source of entertainment also impacted business. It's worth noting that some theaters were also demolished, and repurposed for different purposes or as part of urban development.
