What Is the Difference Between the Golden Globes & the Oscars?

Probably the two most confused awards shows in the entertainment industry are the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards (the Oscars). They seem similar and often have common winners and participants. Often they get confused because of their similarities, but they each have definitive differences to set them apart.
  1. History

    • The first Academy Awards ceremony took place May 16, 1929, at the famous Hotel Roosevelt, still located in Hollywood today. The first Golden Globes awards ceremony was in January 1944 at the 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles. The Academy Awards, the older of the two, is considered the most prestigious.

    Function

    • The Academy Awards, or Oscars, is an award show with categories only in motion picture, while the Golden Globe categories are in motion pictures and television.

    Judging

    • The Golden Globes is voted on by the HFPA, or the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, while the Academy Awards is voted on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences committee members.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people confuse the awards to be the same awards show, while others are confused as to whether the shows present awards for television, motion pictures or both. Methods of voting also get confused.

    Time Frame

    • The Golden Globes always come before the Academy Awards. The Golden Globes is usually a preview of the Academy Awards for motions pictures but does not necessarily mirror it.
