How did the merchants on silk road get silk?

Silk worms were raised exclusively in China until about 550 AC. The Chinese had a monopoly over the most precious textiles on earth — silk, at least until its manufacturing secrets finally got out when monks who traded with China, smuggled silkworm eggs out in hidden, hollow bamboo walking canes.
