Prepare for the trick beforehand. Using the knife, scrape off some of the wooden match beneath the match head, about a quarter to halfway down the match. Be careful not to damage the head of the match.
Color the shaved part of the match and the match head with the black marker. It should closely resemble an already burnt match.
Hide the fake burnt match in the inside of the joint of your thumb, where your thumb meets your hand. It should not be visible from the back of your hand. Hold the second match with the fingers of the same hand
Strike the second match and allow it to burn to about the same place you colored your fake match. Blow it out.
Shake your hand so it looks like you are cooling it off, but really throw it down on the floor, into your lap or somewhere where nobody will notice it. All in the same motion work the fake match up into your fingers where the burnt match was. Make eye contact and a little conversation while you are doing this to distract attention away from your hand.
Light the second match and enjoy the reactions of your spectators. They will think you lit the same match twice.
