Pre-Production Phase

* In 2009, Lionsgate Entertainment acquired the rights to Suzanne Collins' novel "The Hunger Games".

* Gary Ross was hired as director and screenwriter, with Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik producing the film.

* Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss Everdeen in March 2011, beating out other contenders like Saoirse Ronan, Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Chloe Grace Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld.

Production Phase

* Principal photography of the film began in March 2011 in Asheville, North Carolina.

* Shooting also took place in Conyers, Georgia; Lawrenceville, Georgia; and Henry River Mill Village, Georgia.

* The film was shot using Panavision Genesis HD cameras and Technicolor color processing.

* Filming wrapped in June 2011, after 83 days of production.

Post-Production Phase

* The film's post-production work took place at the company's headquarters in Los Angeles and was supervised by editor Stephen Mirrione and visual effects supervisor Philip Brennan.

* Approximately 900 visual effects shots were completed by seven visual effects studios, including Zoic Studios, Rhythm & Hues Studios, Double Negative, Method Studios and The Third Floor.

* Composer James Newton Howard composed the film's score.

Release Phase

* "The Hunger Games" premiered in Los Angeles on March 12, 2012, and was released theatrically in the United States on March 23.

* The film was released in over 14,000 screens in North America and 6,000 screens internationally.

* The film grossed over $694 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2012 and the highest-grossing film in Lionsgate's history at the time.
