Katniss and Peeta strategize, knowing they are the last of the careers' targets. They decide to hide in a giant tree, using its natural camouflage to their advantage.
Cato, driven by his desperation, attempts to climb the tree. Peeta distracts him with a thrown knife, giving Katniss the opportunity to shoot an arrow into his leg.
The scene shifts to the Capitol, where the Gamemakers are discussing the lack of entertainment. They decide to force the tributes to confront each other by turning the arena into a nightmarish landscape of fog and thunder.
In the arena, the fog descends, creating confusion and disorientation. Katniss and Peeta, still hidden in the tree, are attacked by wolves, which are revealed to be genetically engineered by the Capitol.
Katniss manages to kill some of the wolves, but is ultimately forced to flee the tree with Peeta. They run through the fog, desperately trying to find a safe place.
Clove finds Katniss and tries to kill her. However, Thresh, remembering Katniss's kindness to Rue, intervenes and kills Clove.
